As one of the insurance coordinators at Schumacher & Bauer, I get asked all the time “Why do I even have dental insurance?” Insurance can be confusing, but we’re fortunate to have a great preventative care package for patients who may not have dental insurance.

I have a real love/hate relationship with dental insurance. I love that it brings patients to our office, but I hate everything else about it!

Dental insurance is absolutely nothing like medical insurance, and it can be really confusing. The best way to think about dental insurance is to consider it as a discount program. It will pay for you to have preventative appointments and then will give you a discount when treatment is needed. Unlike medical insurance, if anything major happens, it will not be there to help you.

People often feel if they’re not offered insurance through an employer, their only option is to buy a self-insured dental plan, or they resort to just going without insurance. It makes me angry because most of the time the self-insured plans require you to pay into it for a year before they’ll even cover anything.

That’s why I love everything about the Schumacher & Bauer preventative care package. Our preventative care package includes two cleanings and exams for the year, a set of diagnostic X-rays and a discount on any necessary dental procedures. We created this preventative care package to help those who don’t have dental insurance or for times when our package is a better option. We wanted to make sure our patients were getting the preventative and restorative dental treatment they needed when they needed it, rather than putting their health at risk due to a fear of cost.

Insurance is constantly changing and can be confusing for people to understand. (Even for me sometimes!) That’s why I enjoy helping our patients understand dental insurance better. I do whatever I can to look into each patient’s insurance for them and let them know what their best options may be.

Whether you have questions regarding coverage, or you’re signing up for your benefits and need to know which plan may be best, I enjoy the challenge of figuring out how to maximize your benefits and minimize your out-of-pocket costs. Contact us today if you have questions about dental insurance or the Schumacher & Bauer preventative care package—we’re more than happy to help!
